Nantucket Climate

Nantucket is located about 30 miles off the Massachusetts coast and offers a warm and mild climate from spring to fall. Nantucket's island location affords it warmer average temperatures than the mainland. Typical summer temperatures range from 70 to 75 degrees. Early fall temps are usually in the low 60s with latter fall temperatures dipping into the 40s. Winter temperatures average in the low to mid 30s. Early spring warms to an average in the high 30s with temperatures in the latter part of the season averaging in the 50s.

Nantucket Lighthouses

Nantucket is home to three beautiful historic lighthouses. Almost forming the points of a triangle these stately structures stand gracefully watching over those who travel the seas surrounding Nantucket Island. The first of these magnificent landmarks is Brant Point Lighthouse, originally constructed in 1746, it holds its place in history as the second-oldest lighthouse in the United States. At only 26 feet tall it is still visible for 10 miles. From its humble beginnings as a lantern on a platform, through storms and reconstructions the tenth structure stands today. Although its tower is off limits to the public, the lighthouse is close enough to walk from the ferry landing. The second of these fabulous towers, Great Point Light, was built in 1785 and has been rebuilt many times since. Finally destroyed in a storm in the 80s a replica of the stone tower was erected. It is inaccessible by road, located in the Coatue Wildlife Refuge it can be reached by four wheel drive vehicle with a permit. Guided tours that end with a tour of the Great Point Lighthouse may be available, depending on the season. The third in the group is the Sankaty Head Lighthouse, built in 1850 it sets on a bluff 90 feet above sea level. The lighthouse is 70 feet tall and faces problems from erosion of the cliff it calls home. The tower of the lighthouse is closed to the public, but the grounds are open to visitors allowing a close up view of this magnificent wonder. Two of these three amazing pieces of history are still in use by the Coast Guard. Whether you view from a distance, stand beside, or climb to the top of these noble giants there is no denying the overwhelming feeling of awe.

Nantucket Travel Tips

The climate of Nantucket allows visitors to enjoy outdoor activities year round. One of the most visited places of vacationers to Nantucket are the beaches and waters of the island. Visitors must take care to stay protected from the sun. The cool breezes that blow across the island might feel great and make the sun feel like it is not as hot as it is, but the sun can burn even on cloudy days. Be sure to wear sunscreen with a high SPF. Since the sunscreen may wash off in the water it is wise to reapply it after swimming and after a few hours on the beach. If you get a bad sunburn it might end up putting a damper on your vacation. When you are in or on the water make sure to check current weather conditions and do not enter areas that are posted. When you are at the beach take care to notice if there is a lifeguard on duty and watch that children don't swim in areas with warning signs. Take extra care and make sure you know where they are at all times when you are in, on, or around the water. Nantucket is a safe place to visit, but it’s still a good idea to use traveler's checks instead of cash. Do not to leave valuables in your car or on the beach. Numerous banks are located throughout the area that offer currency exchange and ATM access.
